HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL:
Sir Barry Jackson
The Birmingham Theatre School was founded by Sir Barry Jackson in the theatre that he built, namely The Old Rep Theatre, which was also the first repertory theatre in the world.
In 1942 Sir Barry Jackson appointed Mary Richards, whom he had previously worked with as an actress to take over as principal of the school, establishing a new era in theatre training.
In 1990, Chris Rozanski was appointed Principal. Over the last 21 years the school has trained thousands of full and part time students across a wide range of production based courses. He has continued the legacy of training from the original founders. The Birmingham Theatre School has embraced the long-standing philosophy of quality production and accessibility for all of its students. The school is housed within The Old Fire Station which provides a centralised hub for all the schools rehearsal and production needs. This unique facility continues the long tradition of working within historic buildings and we are pleased to accommodate both student and members of the general public within this arena facility. Its easy access to city centre and off road parking makes it a safe and vibrant venue for all.
THE OLD FIRE STATION:
The Old Fire Station on the Moseley Road remains one of the finest buildings in Balsall Heath. During the blitz in the Second World War the station worked overtime in tandem with the auxiliary fire stations to cope with the fires caused by the incendiary bombs. The building is no longer a fire station and is now a drama school. It does though retain many of the fire station features.
